These limits apply to all weapons except pistols. We define a pistol as any weapon with a barrel length of six (6) inches or less and no shoulder stock. Folding stocks and collapsible stocks do count as stocks for this purpose! This rule is meant to include typical sidearms while excluding compact SMGs and PDWs.
You may carry as many sidearm magazines as you like, provided that these magazines only fit sidearms. You cannot convert an Armalite replica into a sidearm and use that as an excuse to carry an unlimited number of AR magazines! You are also not allowed to transfer ammunition from sidearm magazines to other magazines.
Shotguns are generally not an issue as long as they feed from an internal magazine. If a shotgun has a detachable magazine, its capacity is considered to be the total of the capacities of all the shotgun shells in the magazine. For example, if it holds twenty (20) shotgun shells, each holding three (3) BBs, it is considerd to be a sixty (60) round magazine.
Some rules refer to support weapons. Generally, a replica may be considered a support weapon if its real-steel counterpart features a quick-change or heavy barrel and belt-feed capability. The organizers of an event may designate other criteria for support weapons as they choose. As a general rule, replicas of the weapons linked from the Modern Firearms machine guns page will be accepted as support weapons at most ops.
Magazines are divided into five types for our purposes:
Magazine Type | Capacity (in BBs) |
---|---|
Box mag | 801 or more |
Hi-cap | 181-800 |
Mid-cap | 86-180 |
Standard | 31-85 |
Low-cap | 1-30 |
With these definitions in mind, we've defined three levels of ammunition restriction: None, loose, and strict. Sidearm magazines and 40mm shells do not count toward these totals, but all other magazines do! If you're carrying multiple non-sidearm replicas, we're restricting the total number of magazines you can carry, not the magazines per replica.
In case it isn't clear, the idea is that the organizers of an event should chose one of these restriction levels. All the organizers would need to do is say "Operation Massive Hosedown will have NO magazine and ammo restrictions" or "Operation Desert Popgun will use STRICT magazine and ammo restrictions, as defined at http://blahblahblah." The organizers should pick the rule set that best fits their operational concept and audience.
Some rules also place a limit on the total number of BBs you may carry. These rules refer to the maximum capacity of the magazines. You may not partially fill magazines to get under the limits. It would simply be too difficult to monitor and enforce partial filling for allowing it to be practical.
Roughly speaking, anything goes. Any size magazine, any number of magazines. You may carry bulk ammunition (bags, bottles, etc) and reloading tools. You may reload in the field.
Loose restrictions seek to allow all players to participate while preventing the worst sorts of ammunition abuse. All types of magazine are legal, but the number you may carry varies on a sliding scale. You may only reload at designated loading points, typically but not always limited to the parking lot and respawn areas.
If your largest magazine is a hi-cap, you may carry at least one (1) hi-cap. If your hi-cap carries fewer than 450 rounds, you may also bring additional hi-cap, standard, or low-cap magazines to bring your BB count up to 450 rounds. In other words, if your hi-cap holds 225 rounds or less, you can carry a second hi-cap. The 450 round limit for people using multiple magazines is a hard limit. If that extra low-cap would bring you to 451 rounds, leave it at home.
If your largest magazine is a mid-cap, you may carry up to three (3) mid-cap magazines. If three mid-cap magazines leave you with fewer than 540 rounds, you may carry additional standard or low-cap magazines to bring your BB count up to 540 rounds. The extra standard or low-cap magazines may not bring you over 540 rounds under any circumstances.
If your largest magazine is a standard, you may carry up to ten (10) standard or low-cap magazines.
If your largest magazine is a low-cap, you may carry as many low-cap magazines as you wish.
Box magazines may only be used by players carrying support weapons. Players using support weapons may carry a single box magazine. No extra magazines are permitted.
Strict restrictions seek to simulate the limited firepower available in real combat. Only standard and low-cap magazines may be used. Carrying bulk BBs or loading tools into the field is prohibited.
If your largest magazine is a standard, you may carry up to ten (10) standard or low-cap magazines.
If your largest magazine is a low-cap, you may carry any number of low-cap magazines.
Box magazines may only be used by players carrying support weapons. Players using support weapons may carry a single box magazine. No extra magazines are permitted.
